- Transgender Rights Project Law Student Intern, NY, USA

Transgender Rights Project Law Student Intern
Lambda Legal

Location: USA -
National Headquarters, New York

Description –

Lambda Legal
seeks a Law Student Intern for its Legal Department at its New York City Headquarters. The intern will assist the Transgender Rights Project Director with research, preparation of legal filings, and project organization to advance Lambda Legal’s cutting-edge impact litigation and advocacy.

Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgender (LGBT) people and those with HIV, through impact litigation, education, and public policy work. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in New York City, Lambda Legal has regional offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, and Dallas.

Lambda Legal’s law reform, policy, and education work encompasses a wide range of areas critically important to LGBT people and those living with HIV, such as federal and state constitutional law issues; relationship protections, including the freedom to marry; child custody, visitation, assisted reproduction, adoption, and foster care; sexual orientation, gender identity, and HIV discrimination in employment, schools, youth in out-of-home care systems, health care, identity documents, the criminal justice system, and other areas; asylum and immigration policy; harassment and violence; and anti-LGBT ballot initiatives. Lambda Legal has been involved in numerous landmark United States and state Supreme Court cases, including Lawrence v. Texas, Romer v. Evans, Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, In re Marriage Cases, Varnum v. Brien, Brandon v. County of Richardson, Lopez v. River Oaks Imaging & Diagnostic Group, Glenn v. Brumby, L.P v. City of Philadelphia, Fields v. Smith.

The law student intern, under the supervision of Lambda Legal’s Transgender Rights Project Director, will assist primarily with advancing and expanding Lambda Legal’s transgender civil rights work. Tasks will include: research and drafting in ongoing cases, prospective cases, and amicus curiae briefs; research, drafting, and/or editing publications on issues for general public education; and assistance with the maintenance and expansion of resources for our national legal Help Desk.

Because of the focused and challenging nature of the work Lambda Legal does, we prefer to hire law students who have some experience or background in transgender civil rights issues. Commitment to public interest law also greatly strengthens an application. Lambda Legal encourages applications from transgender people, people of color, and people with disabilities, including HIV. The ability to speak Spanish and additional languages is a plus.

This is a nonpaying volunteer position. Interns are strongly encouraged to seek out and apply for grants from their school and/or funding from other sources, or course credit where available.

Position will remain open until filled. Applicants should send resume, cover letter (with availability and areas of interest), and short writing sample to:
