Center Background: 

The Center for Reproductive Rights (the Center) is a nonprofit legal advocacy organization dedicated to advancing reproductive freedom as a fundamental right that all governments are legally obligated to respect, protect, and fulfill. The Center engages in cutting-edge impact litigation, policy analysis, advocacy, research, and public education throughout the world to achieve women’s equality in society and to ensure that all women have access to appropriate and freely chosen reproductive health services.

The Center's Global Legal Program (GLP) is looking for an enthusiastic, resourceful and highly organized JD/LLM student intern with a commitment to reproductive rights issues to engage in a variety of research and writing projects related to GLP's fact-finding, advocacy, and litigation in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and at the United Nations. This internship, which will be based at our New York headquarters, will provide the successful candidate with experience using advocacy, international human rights law, global development and public health to advance reproductive rights around the world.

This intership is unpaid. To participate in this internship, interns will need to receive academic credit or a stipend from their schools. The internship is part-time and ideally will begin in February 2018 and extend through May 2018. Exact schedule is flexible according to the student's academic schedule, but preference will be given to candidates that are available for a minimum of 15 hours/week spread over multiple days.

Responsibilities:

The scope of this internship may cover, but is not limited to:

  • Conducting legal and policy research and analysis on international law, human rights law, and foreign and comparative law;
  • Supporting the Global Legal Program's litigation and advocacy efforts by assisting with drafting legal petitions, shadow letters to United Nations human rights bodies, briefing papers, internal memorandums, and other documents; and
  • Using editing skills to assist with bluebooking and fact-checking of reports, petitions, shadow letters, and other documents as needed.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Current JD/LLM student in good standing and based in the New York City area during the Spring 2018 semester;
  • Exceptional research, writing and advocacy ability;
  • Demonstrated interest and knowledge of international development, international law, international human rights, women's rights, disability rights, LGBT rights, or other related fields;
  • Strong proven oral and written command of English is essential; knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Outlook, and internet) are required.
