Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus works to defend and promote the rights of low-income immigrants with the goal of building community power. Since 1972, we have litigated high-profile cases and engaged in community education and empowerment, policy advocacy, and direct client representation.
Position Description: Advancing Justice-ALC seeks a Staff Attorney to join our dynamic Housing Rights Program. We provide holistic, community legal services to low-income residents in gateway communities for new immigrants, where tenants face displacement due to gentrification and other economic pressures.
Our Housing Rights Program has played a key, historical role in preserving affordable housing in San Francisco’s Chinatown and continues that legacy with a multi-pronged approach to housing defense. Through our housing clinics, we provide direct client representation to individuals and families who face eviction or other issues that make preserving their housing difficult or impossible. We also outreach to community groups to provide Know Your Rights education and support local, grassroots efforts to implement just and equitable housing policy. When possible, we work closely with tenants and grassroots advocates to use impact litigation to effect systemic changes in buildings and neighborhoods.
The Housing Rights Staff Attorney will be an integral part of our Housing Team. The attorney’s responsibilities will include:
Providing full-scope representation to tenants in unlawful detainer proceedings and administrative hearings
Conducting or supervising intakes and providing legal advice and counsel to tenants in our housing clinics
Engaging in motion practice and litigation for unlawful detainer cases as needed
Supporting impact litigation cases–including multi-tenant and building-wide housing cases–as they arise
Developing policy analysis for community partners around housing issues that impact low-income tenants
Working with our Community Advocates to build relationships with grassroot community partners who support tenants and/or do anti-displacement work
Supporting Know Your Rights trainings and other community legal education to the tenant community
B.A./B.S. and J.D. degrees with membership in good standing with the California State Bar
Highly motivated and self-starting
Detail-oriented and ability to multi-task
Excellent research, analytical, written, and oral communication skills
Ability to work with a highly diverse group of mission-driven lawyers and staff with a range of substantive law knowledge, experience, and expertise
Demonstrated leadership and ability to work independently and in collaboration with other attorneys, community advocates, and community-based organizations
Demonstrated commitment to advancing the rights of low-income, people of color, immigrant, or worker communities
Litigation experience and substantive legal experience in housing law preferred, but not required
Preferred bilingual skills in a non-English language
Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary is based on our salary scale which accounts for years of relevant experience and principles of internal equity. A full benefits package is included.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer. All persons are encouraged to apply, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation or religious affiliation.
