Reports To: Director of Policy & Community Outreach
                            
Classification: Full Time, Non-Exempt
 
Summary: The Outreach and Organizing Coordinator will be responsible for helping to build a grassroots movement to advance LGBTQ rights in New York. The Outreach and Organizing Coordinator will play a critical role in The Center’s Advocacy Program by engaging in community organizing, civic education training, and overall community activism. The Outreach and Organizing Coordinator will report directly to the Director of Policy & Community Outreach, to help generate and expand base support for advancement of LGBTQ inclusive policy proposals, while working closely with the communications team to recruit and mobilize LGBTQ activists.
 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 

    In collaboration with the Director of Policy & Community Outreach, develop and implement outreach strategies to meaningfully engage with community members and organizational partners in grassroots mobilization at the local, state, regional, and national levels.
    Work with the Director of Policy & Community Outreach to develop and implement targeted advocacy plans, with supporting materials, to coordinate grassroots responses to both negative and positive policy actions at the local, state, and national levels.
    Help facilitate regular outreach events and activities to build awareness, promote resources, and correct misinformation regarding advocacy needs for the community.
    Work with the communications team to develop and disseminate legislative alerts and other relevant information to the community through digital sources and mixed media platforms.
    Organize, recruit and mobilize volunteers in support of the mission of the Advocacy Program; build and maintain an effective grassroots volunteer base for civic engagement.
    In collaboration with the Director of Policy & Community Outreach, develop and execute outreach strategies to conduct digital and in-person civic education trainings with diverse stakeholders throughout the state.
    Cultivate and maintain relationships with a broad coalition of partners; develop cross-movement strategies and coalitions in areas including, but not limited to, immigration, criminal justice, racial justice, women’s rights, and faith-based activism.
    Ensure on-the-ground organizing is aligned and integrated with the needs and goals of each priority area of the Advocacy Program, as well as The Center’s larger objectives.
    Adjust outreach and mobilization strategies to meet changing political and legislative demands; consistently monitor progress to goals and communicate these to the Policy Director; conduct research as needed.
    Other duties as assigned.

 
Position Requirements:
 

    Bachelor’s Degree in a human service, policy, advocacy or related field preferred.
    Demonstrated success and experience in project coordination; building or working in and for coalitions.
    Strong interpersonal skills, time management and organizational skills, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects at once.
    A minimum of three (3) years of campaign leadership, organizing and base-building, and coalition-building experience.
    Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with an ability to interact with a wide range of personalities and diverse community members.
    Social media and digital campaign experience a plus.
    Experience with recruitment and retention of community and civic leaders around a common cause or campaign.
    Familiarity with policy and movement building landscape of New York, with a particular focus on the LGBT community.
    Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently, meet deadlines and deliver a quality final product.
    Strong administrative, organization, and written/verbal communication skills; bilingual a plus.
    Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of personalities.
    Commitment to inclusive, multicultural programming; prior experience working with in coalitions with diverse communities and an understanding of intersectional oppressions.
    Knowledge and understanding of the issues, needs and interests of LGBT youth, adults, families and community, including knowledge of the spectrum of gender identity and transgender issues.
    Frequent statewide travel and flexibility to work on evenings and weekends as necessary.
    A strong commitment to the mission of The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center.
