Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights

The Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights invites applications for the position of Development Manager, to be based in Chicago.
The Young Center protects and advances the rights and best interests of unaccompanied and separated immigrant children in the United States through its two programs: the Child Advocate program and the Policy program. The Child Advocate program provides independent, best interests guardians ad litem for immigrant children pursuant to the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act and the Violence Against Women Act. The Policy program advocates with legislators, federal agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure that federal laws, policies, and practices promote consideration of immigrant children’s best interests—their safety and well-being, with due regard for their expressed wishes—in all decisions. The organization is headquartered in Chicago, and operates programs in Chicago, Harlingen, Washington DC, New York, Houston, San Antonio, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.

About the job. The Young Center seeks to hire a Development Manager to do grant writing and donor engagement. The Development Manager will report to and work in partnership with the Development Director. The Development Manager will have an extensive portfolio of existing grants and will continue to build the Young Center’s institutional foundation support, while also managing a small portfolio of mid-level donors. A passion for the mission of the Young Center is crucial. The Development Director will be based at the South Loop office of the Young Center.


    Manage grants program, including the grant calendar
    Draft LOIs, proposals, and reports for foundations and corporate sponsors
    Research grants and corporate support, including developing new areas of potential support in fields outside of immigration
    Maintain up-to-date communication with the finance team to ensure speedy recognition of funds upon receipt
    Develop creative engagement plan for reporting and develop strong relationships with program officers
    Create quarterly updates for a more general audience including major individual donors and foundations without interim reporting requirements
    Manage a small portfolio of mid-level donors via phone calls, email, notes, personal meetings, and targeted engagement activities (~15% of the position’s time)
    Support the Development Director with forward-looking reporting on the Young Center’s grants-related financials to aid in 3-to-5-year strategic planning

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: We are seeking an exceptional professional with 3-7 years of fundraising experience. We are looking for a unique set of characteristics:

    Significant experience and demonstrable success in grant writing/management
    Knowledge of foundations and corporations, locally as well as nationally
    Demonstrated ability to research new foundation prospects, as well as write successful proposals
    Excellent writing and communications skills.
    Ability to work with little direct supervision, manage multiple tasks simultaneously and take ownership of the job
    Highly organized, detail oriented, ability to maintain a high level of follow through and confidentiality
    Bachelor’s degree

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical demands include regular attendance; keyboarding; sitting for long periods (at least 5 hours a day); driving. Ability to use computer, telephone, and copy machine. Ability to travel by plane, car and other conveyances within U.S.
