CRISIS GROUP – AFRICA PROGRAM

The International Crisis Group is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisational, with some 135 staff members on five continents, working though field-based analysis and high-level advocacy to prevent and resolve deadly conflict worldwide. Widely acknowledged as one of the most effective and applauded actors in the field of conflict prevention and resolution worldwide, we are seeking an Analyst to work in Crisis Group’s West Africa Project.

Role:

Ideally based in Dakar, Senegal, and working closely with other members of the West Africa team, the successful candidate will research and produce reports on security, political governance, security, human rights and social issues related to conflict in Cote d’Ivoire, Niger, Sierra Leone and/or Liberia.

Responsibilities:

* Conduct extensive field research into prevailing security, political and social conditions, in particular on Cote d’Ivoire, Niger, Sierra Leone and/or Liberia;
* Provide analysis and advice on conflict prevention and resolution issues in those countries and the region;
* Propose policy initiatives to relevant governmental and non-governmental actors to address the underlying issues that feed grievances;
* Prepare detailed reports and briefing papers setting out relevant research findings and policy recommendations;
* Carry out advocacy and media work to disseminate research findings and recommendations.

Requirements:

* In-depth knowledge of the West Africa region, in particular Cote d’Ivoire, Niger, Sierra Leone and/or Liberia; knowledge of Cameroon an advantage;
* Extensive contacts in West Africa with governmental officials and non-governmental organisations, media and academia;
* 5+ years of professional experience in conflict analysis, journalism, NGO, INGO, or government work related to West Africa;
* Masters in International Relations, Political Science, Journalism, Sociology or equivalent professional experience;
* Excellent demonstrated writing and analytical skills, and ability to summarise significant amounts of written material;
* Fluency in English and French, knowledge of local languages an advantage.

In the cover letter (which should be sent as an e-mail) the candidate should briefly propose his or her own ideas on themes for two future Crisis Group reports relating to conflict in West Africa and briefly describe how she/he would research them (in no more than two pages).
