Advocates of Human Rights

The Advocates for Human Rights is a volunteer-based, non-governmental, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the promotion and protection of internationally recognized human rights. For more than 30 years, our innovative programming has changed the lives of refugees and immigrants, women, ethnic and religious minorities, children, and other marginalized communities. We investigate and expose human rights violations, represent immigrants and refugees seeking asylum, train and assist groups that protect human rights, engage the public and policy-makers; and advocate for legal reform and sound policy that reflect human rights principles

Position Summary:

The Development Director is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, and monitoring of The Advocates’ overall fundraising program. The Development Director reports to the Executive Director and coordinates the development efforts of board members, program directors, and other staff. The Development Director should have the imagination and capacity to generate descriptive copy that is accessible and motivating to the lay reader, including non-lawyers and those not immediately familiar with human rights issues. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, a proven ability to coordinate competing needs, and a track record of accomplishments in short and long-range planning and implementation. This position will supported by a development associate.

Responsibilities:
Create and implement development plan and establish fund raising goals. Primary emphasis will be on major gift, foundation, law firm, corporate, and special event fund raising
Plan and oversee execution of annual fund raising events, including recruiting and managing committees of event volunteers
Oversee launch of major donor fundraising campaign
Develop planned giving program
Oversee database management and donor acknowledgements
Plan and execute donor thank you and cultivation events
Serve as staff liaison to the Board Development Committee
Work with Communications Director to develop and implement communications strategies to help increase the visibility of The Advocates’ work and achieve consistency in the message projected by board and staff
Other short-term and long-term projects as appropriate
Essential Skills:
Successful track record in professional fund raising for a non-profit
Proven ability to establish and cultivate donor relationships with individuals, law firms, foundations, and corporations
Excellent time-management, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
Ability to balance priorities and produce high-quality work in a fast-paced office environment
Must be highly proficient in the use of standard office software in a networked environment and familiar with general office operations, fund raising software and databases
Demonstrated commitment to social justice and/or human rights
Compensation: Compensation is commensurate with experience. Our generous benefit package includes vacation, medical, dental, and retirement plans.
