About the Position: The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre (SJAC) is seeking a motivated Senior Researcher to lead the development and expansion of its human rights and transitional justice research initiatives, including conceptualizing and managing SJAC’s research agenda, developing research partnerships, and streamlining research roll-out, including planning events, panels, and facilitating media relations.
Develop a deep and thorough understanding of Syrian conflict dynamics and role that SJAC can play in research and policy development, particularly with regard to advocating for human rights and transitional justice.
Conceptualize research topics and propose research ideas to the Executive Director which align with SJAC’s strategic priorities and incorporates SJAC’s documentation, including first-hand interviews with survivors. Some examples of recent research topics include security sector reform, sexual and gender-based violence, and property restitution.
Conduct initial background research and develop research outlines, formulating a research topic from beginning to end.
Maintain awareness of relevant research being conducted by human rights organizations, think tanks and other like-minded organizations in order to identify opportunities for partnerships; initiate and coordinate partnerships to produce joint products.
Manage the work of researchers, including assigning tasks, providing feedback, and integrating their work into a final product.
Lead the rollout of a report once it is finalized, including partnering with like-minded organizations for launch events, responding to media requests, and conducting outreach to publicize SJAC’s findings among relevant UN agencies, governments and other stakeholders.
Identify opportunities to publicize research products in flexible formats, including briefs for policymakers, short videos, and op-eds.
Assist with writing summaries of project activities and results for quarterly and other program reports for funding agencies as needed.
Skills and Experience
Advanced university degree in law, international law (preferred), international relations, or other relevant discipline.
A passion for advocating for human rights and transitional justice.
Experience working on the Middle East, specifically the Syrian conflict. Familiarity or experience with other conflicts in MENA is a plus.
Five years of professional research experience in an international organization or similar institution, including experience overseeing the research process from beginning to end: conceptualizing topics, overseeing work produced by researchers, and finalizing reports.
Experience managing the rollout of reports, including event planning (including experience partnering with think-tanks and other like-minded organizations for events), and liaising with media.
Experience managing staff through the writing and research process.
Excellent organizational skills, including attention to detail, ability to prioritize and multi-task, and ability to work under and adhere to tight deadlines.
Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team; must be a team player and demonstrate a sense of responsibility and sensitivity in dealing with diverse audiences.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Fluency in Arabic preferred, but not required.
